A New Style

August 2, 2010 § 1 Comment

For the past couple of years I have been playing around with a new style.  I’ve noticed more of a flat graphic look out there, very attractive and apparently popular with the art directors.  I don’t want to jump on the “me too” band wagon but I would like to incorporate certain aspects of the style into my own watercolor work.  Here are a few samples of what I’ve been doing.

This image was the beginning of a change to a new direction.  I stylized the hair and flattened her dress.  She still looks a little realistic but it was a start.

A couple more pieces along the lines of what I was attempting to do.  Some of the shapes are becoming more graphic.

This is the painting that really started to turn the corner with respect to what I was trying to accomplish.  Flat color and simple decorative patterns.  The idea is to develop it and keep it consistent.

§ One Response to A New Style

I love this evolution for you. I have always enjoyed your water color style, but this is most interesting. I especially love the way the pattern of the fabric on the arm flows with the rest of the dress. I didn’t even notice it right away but it makes it much more solid!
